Local Calculus Math Tutor (Part-Time, School-Year Commitment)

Tutor Location: Springfield / Fairfax, VA (in-person; some online possible)

Job Type: Part-Time, After School & Weekend Availability

Pay Rate: Starting at $30/hour

Commitment: Minimum 4 hours/week | School-year commitment required

·       Prepare structured lessons but adapt in real time to student needs

·       Break down complex ideas step-by-step and explain concepts in multiple ways

·       Communicate clearly with both students and parents

This Role Is NOT a Fit If You:

·       Cancel sessions last minute or struggle with reliability

·       Rely on improvising every session without preparation

·       Become frustrated when students don’t understand quickly

·       Prefer working completely independently without feedback

·       Are only looking for a short-term or “quick money” tutoring gig

Key Responsibilities

·       Tutor students one-on-one or in small groups in AP Calculus, IB Math, and advanced high school math

·       Diagnose learning gaps and rebuild concepts through scaffolded instruction

·       Create lesson plans aligned to student goals while adapting during sessions as needed

·       Provide consistent practice and conceptual reinforcement

·       Foster a judgment-free, encouraging learning environment

·       Communicate directly with parents about progress and areas of focus

·       Submit session notes within 24 hours

·       Respond to scheduling requests within 8 hours

·       Maintain professionalism, preparedness, and punctuality

Required Qualifications

·       Demonstrated experience tutoring Calculus, Precalculus, IB Math, or similar advanced courses

·       Ability to explain math concepts clearly, patiently, and in multiple ways

·       Strong empathy and emotional awareness when working with students

·       Reliable transportation to meet local students

·       Availability during after-school hours and weekends

·       Comfort using tools like Zoom and Google Meet

·       Organized, responsive, and dependable

Note: While strong math skills are required, clarity, empathy, and teaching ability matter more than raw content mastery.
